How to check gas leaks with a soapy water test

Only carry out this basic check outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area, with no ignition sources nearby. Keep children and pets clear. Make a solution of water with a small amount of dishwashing liquid, then apply it gently to the outside of the connection using a brush, sponge or spray bottle. Do not pull fittings apart or attempt to tighten, alter or repair gas components yourself.

With the appliance controls off, open the cylinder valve slowly if it is safe to do so. Watch the soapy solution for a minute or two. Growing bubbles or foam that continues to expand indicate gas escaping from that point. A few bubbles caused by applying the solution are normal. Bubbles that keep forming are not.

Never use a flame to find a leak

Using a match, lighter or barbecue flame to locate a gas leak is dangerous. Even a small spark can ignite accumulated gas. The same goes for testing by repeatedly operating switches, plugging in equipment or starting appliances near the suspected source.

Electronic gas detectors can be useful as an additional early-warning tool, particularly around LPG storage or caravans. However, their placement, sensitivity and maintenance affect their reliability. A detector should support safe habits and regular servicing, not replace a proper inspection where there is a concern.

What to do if you suspect an indoor gas leak

Indoors, the priority is ventilation and evacuation, not testing. If it is safe without touching electrical equipment, open doors and windows on your way out. Avoid creating sparks. Do not operate the rangehood, air conditioner, fan or garage door.

Once everyone is outside and well away from the building, call for assistance. If you know where the gas meter isolation valve is and can reach it without entering a gas-filled area, shut it off. If you are unsure, leave it alone and wait for emergency or licensed help.

Pay attention after renovations, moving appliances, installing a new barbecue, replacing cylinders or any excavation work near known gas services.
