Ignoring maintenance can reduce water pressure, compromise filtration performance and, in some cases, create a hygiene issue inside the filter housing. A family using tank water full-time will generally have different servicing needs from a small home connected to town water.

Keep a simple record of cartridge changes, water test results and any changes you notice in taste, odour or flow. If water suddenly becomes discoloured, develops an unusual smell or pressure drops noticeably, it is better to investigate the cause rather than only replace a cartridge and hope for the best.

You should also understand cartridge or media replacement costs, servicing intervals, warranty requirements and whether the equipment is suitable for drinking-water use.
